The Wanted Out To Prove Boy Bands 'Make Good Music'
'If you like us despite it or because of it, then we're happy,' Jay McGuiness tells MTV News of boy-band label.
By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Sway Calloway
It's not always easy being in a boy band. There are a lot of preconceptions for the five guys who choose to sing catchy pop tunes and dance in formation for a living.
Given that boy bands have come in and out of fashion once every decade for the last few years, it should come as no surprise that we are knee-deep in a brand-new boy-band bonanza. This one is being led by this generation's 'NSYNC and Backstreet Boys: One Direction and the Wanted.
When MTV News sat down with the Wanted to premiere their "Chasing the Sun" video, they chatted a bit about being labeled a "boy band."
"Eventually, we were, like, over it," Jay McGuiness explained. "If you like us despite it or because of it, then we're happy."
Well, something is working for the guys. Their lead U.S. single, "Glad You Came," has topped the charts, and they are once again getting people dancing with "Chasing the Sun," from their just-released debut U.S. EP. It's a good time to be in a boy band, thanks to all the love out there for them. And it's an even better time to be in the Wanted.
It seems that their success might have a lot to do with the way they've approached their boy-band career thus far. "We went out there and we're like, 'You know what? I think we can change people's perspectives of the '90s boy bands,' " Tom Parker explained. "And that was our aim: just to make good music."
Voting in round two of MTV's Battle of the Boy Bands runs until noon ET on Monday, April 30. Winners are determined by fan votes, so if your favorite band made the cut, make sure you keep voting. Tune in to AMTV and MTV Hits for their boy-band video takeovers each day and make sure to spread the word on Twitter using the hashtag #BBB and like us on Facebook for updates!
Vote for your favorite band, discuss and share on Facebook and Twitter in the MTV Battle of the Boy Bands interactive bracket!

Josh Hutcherson Hopes New 'Hunger Games' Director Will Stay True To Tone
Gary Ross 'brought so much to the movie that it's going to be hard for Francis [Lawrence] to come in,' actor tells MTV News.

No one supported Gary Ross more than "Hunger Games" star Josh Hutcherson, who called Ross "my guy" right before the director exited stage left.
Well, with Ross out and Francis Lawrence in to direct the franchise's second film, "Catching Fire," the actor is just hoping that the same magic can be captured without Ross there waving the wand.
"I have spoken to Gary. And I literally don't think I've talked to somebody on the phone and they've sounded more upset than he was," Hutcherson told MTV News at CinemaCon in Las Vegas. "He was so disappointed that he couldn't do it. Unfortunately, with the scheduling and the timing, he just didn't have the time to write the script and prep it the way he wants to, the way his work ethic allows him to be as great as he is, which made me extremely sad.
"Gary, I think, brought so much to the movie, and he created that whole world that was so close to the book and so perfect in so many ways that it's going to be hard for Francis to come in, for sure," he added. "But Francis is extremely talented and everyone I've talked to says he's the best guy in the world. So I think he's going to bring a lot. I haven't spoken to Francis. I've spoken to Gary."
Given how epic "The Hunger Games" is, Lawrence makes for an interesting choice. He's no stranger to making visuals that go big or go home, whether as a music video director who has created show-stopping clips for the likes of Beyoncé and Britney Spears or as a film director ("I Am Legend," "Water for Elephants"). With Ross already having created a certain vision for the big-screen adaptation of Suzanne Collins' books, Hutcherson is hoping there's a way to meld Lawrence's with it.
"I think he'll stay true to the first one. Gary's already established a tone and a theme and kind of a whole world. So I think Francis will operate within that. I hope so," he said. "At the same time, if I were directing, I'd want to bring my own thing to it. So I hope he brings something different to it, which I'm sure he will."

Kim Kardashian's Kanye Earrings And Other Celeb PDA
Kim's KW studs join a long line of creative romantic gestures in Hollywood.

When it comes to the various ways in which celebrity couples offer up public displays of affection, the ante was raised yet again when Kim Kardashian was spotted over the weekend wearing earrings with the initials of rumored boyfriend Kanye West.
But Kim is hardly the first star to wear her heart on her sleeve (or in her ear). Let's take a look back at five other unique celeb PDA:
Tattoos
No matter how well De Beers has ingrained their slogan "A diamond is forever" into our brains, nothing says "I love you forever (hopefully)" like getting a tattoo of your lover's initials, name and/or face. There are so many examples of celebrity couples who have expressed their love via this method that we could write a separate story. The couples who immediately come to mind are Nick Cannon and Mariah Carey, who both got their first-ever ink in celebration of their marriage. Other examples: Tori Spelling's hubby Dean McDermott has his wife's face and décolletage on his arm, Marc Anthony had "Jennifer" on the inside of his wrist before their split, and David and Victoria Beckham.
Blood Bonds
Before there was Brangelina, there was the eyebrow-raising romance and eventual marriage between Angelina Jolie and Billy Bob Thornton. In addition to getting relationship-inspired tattoos to celebrate their love, Jolie surprised everyone by adorning her neck with an amulet that reportedly contained a few drops of Thornton's blood.
Music Videos
If you're a musician and in need of a love interest for your music video, why not invite your real-life love to make an appearance in said clip? In addition to several warm fuzzy stories that involve couples meeting on the sets of their music vids (Katherine Heigl and Josh Kelley, Enrique Iglesias and Anna Kournikova), there are plenty who have featured their boyfriends and girlfriends. Jennifer Lopez is the leading example, first with Ben Affleck's cameo in "Jenny From the Block" and most recently with new love Casper Smart in "Dance Again."
Social Media
The advent of Twitter has brought the world a lot of things — over-sharing chief among them. We've become privy to the inner-workings of celebrity couples, thanks to their back-and-forth interaction on the social-networking site. Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher basically kicked things off by frequently tweeting cute musings back and forth. They are survived by Khloé and Lamar Odom, Carey Hart and Pink, Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard, Nicole Richie and Joel Madden, and Nick Cannon and Mariah Carey (again with the PDA!).
Nail Art
Before their very public breakup last year, Katy Perry took the whole PDA-by-body-art trend to another level when she showed up on the white carpet at the 2010 VMAs with then-husband Russell Brand's face printed onto her fingernails. The gesture was in part due to the fact that Brand wasn't able to attend the awards show that year, along with a tribute factor celebrating the couple's initial introduction at the awards show in 2009.
Where do Kim's Kanye earrings rank among celeb PDAs? Let us know what we missed in the comments!

Will Ferrell, Zach Galifianakis Are 'Deluded Losers' In 'The Campaign'
Director Jay Roach tells MTV News the comedy takes win-at-all-costs politics to an 'absurd degree.'
By Kevin P. Sullivan

For the past few years, Jay Roach, the director of the "Austin Powers" series, has alternated between making comedies and true-life political films for HBO. His latest effort, "The Campaign," combines those two very different genres.
In "The Campaign," which hits theaters on August 10 Will Ferrell plays a popular incumbent North Carolina congressman who suffers a scandal and faces a political opponent for the first time in year, played by Zach Galifianakis.
We spoke with Roach for our Summer Movie Preview and learned just how ridiculous politics can be and what it's like to have Ferrell and Galifianakis on set together.
MTV: You've been switching between political films and comedies recently. What's it like to combine the two?
Jay Roach: That's been an enjoyable part of this one. I've been working on some more serious films at HBO, but Will and Zach and Adam McKay came up with this idea and asked me to get involved about two guys running against each other for a congressional seat and mentioned that it would mostly be about how the win-at-all-costs approach to politics these days could be taken to an absurd degree. It might be funny. I pictured those two guys, Zach and Will. I've worked with both of them briefly on other films, and the idea of those two going up against each other in a super, super negative campaigning situation made me laugh. It would be a chance to delve back into some of the political issues but in a very comedic format.
MTV: Do you find politics funny?
Roach: It's funny, but it's painful. It's painful that it does get absurd. There's definitely humor, but when you're doing it about real-life situations, it makes me anxious. It's uncomfortable. I spent a fair amount of time to put people back into uncomfortable situations that they, in a certain way, wish to avoid because they already happened. I'm trying not to let them forget about them. It's a painful thing to ask the audience to go through. It's a little therapeutic in a different way to laugh through it, as opposed to cry through, because I found myself crying through the other stories. This one, I'm laughing.
MTV: Did doing those political films before help you make this political comedy?
Roach: It did help that I had a little bit of a background and had done a little bit of research. I'm still very naïve about politics. Through the research for those films, I was able to familiarize myself with how campaigns work, especially how spin doctors work, how campaign consultants work. Jason Sudeikis and Dylan McDermott play the respective spit doctors for Will Ferrell's and Zach Galifianakis' characters. Seeing how those dynamics work does at least create a plausible version of that that could be funny.
MTV: How far removed from reality are the politics of "The Campaign"?
Roach: In a certain way, you want to say it's far removed, but if the current campaign is any indication, it's not that far. While we were shooting, we would sometimes come to the set having seen a debate the night before and "Oh my God, reality is trumping us. We better step it up." I do think politics have become kind of a circus anyway. We were just a contrived circus, as opposed to the real one. Because it's Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis, and they are determined to smear each other to destruction, we use that premise some of the campaign ads and campaign stunts pretty far.
MTV: What was it like having two great comedians in the leads?
Roach: They're incredible. I had a great time with both of them. Each is an excellent improviser and a great designer of character. When I heard they might want to work together, I don't know where that goes wrong. Those two guys, who are both very, very good at playing somewhat deluded losers, going against each other with the conviction that they both deserve to be winners, that to me always sounds fun. They compensate for any of their deficiencies by just turning up the conviction that they are super capable. In the case of story, they turn up their antagonism toward each other. In some of the debate scenes, we just let them run and kind of go at each other, using their own improv skills and fantastic stuff came out of it.
MTV: Were they as funny off-camera?
Roach: I would also do stuff off-camera with them. In a debate, I had not decided who the background actors should be cheering for, usually you predetermine that. I just said to the actors off-camera, "Whoever they like best, that's who they're going to cheer for." They started wooing the crowd between takes, offering them bribes and special drinks if they would be on their side. Zach started sharing his little portable fan that he would use to cool off in the New Orleans heat. Will started passing out trays of water. It was hilarious watching them. Then they turned on each other and started insulting each other to try disparage the other and turn their audiences away from them. It was just a funny trick. They riffed so much that I just kept doing it.

Kristen Stewart A 'Gung-Ho' Action Star In 'Snow White'
'Huntsman' director Rupert Sanders also discusses the 'fiendish' Charlize Theron for MTV News' Summer Movie Preview Week.

It's clear from all we've seen from the "Snow White and the Huntsman" trailers, photos and behind-the-scenes sneak peeks that this film is a stepping stone for Kristen Stewart in many ways.
When MTV News caught up with the film's director, Rupert Sanders, recently, he explained how everyone involved in the project stepped up their game for this modern take on a medieval story.
"Kristen is a very driven, visceral, intuitive actress. From a director's point of view, it's great to get into her headspace," he explained. "We did a lot of work together on the script and character, and she really helped inform me how that character was feeling, which really helped my process getting the character onscreen. Kristen was doing a lot of her stunt work, she was riding horses, she was jumping from high precipices into freezing cold water, she was fighting dwarves — she's gung-ho.
Sanders said Stewart's co-star Charlize Theron was equally gung-ho with respect to the lengths she went to take her beauty into a dark and horrible place.
"[She] becomes fiendish," Sanders said. "She was willing to get in tubs of black oil, surrounded by dead ravens, and crawl her way out. For a director, what's great about these two actors is that they will go beyond what you ask of them, and I think it really shows in the performances they've given. They're both very unlike any performance I've seen either of them deliver."
The first-time feature director promised that fans will not be disappointed by what they'll see onscreen when the film opens June 1.
"What I'm most proud of is that it's not a popcorn movie in that respect. It's big and it's epic and there's lots of battle sequences, but it really hits you," he said. "There's not a lot of weeping, but it's a very intense ride. You're really at the edge of people's boundaries. There are new ways of seeing action, which I'm excited about. It's a very modern take on a medieval film but doesn't feel like we're trying to do anything trendy or of the minute. It still feels practical."
It's Summer Movie Preview Week, and MTV News will be bringing you exclusive interviews, clips and photos for the most anticipated summer movies. Get ready to gorge on inside looks at "The Avengers," Robert Pattinson's "Bel Ami," Kristen Stewart's "Snow White," "The Amazing Spider-Man" and more!

Dick Clark's Death: Is It Too Soon For Twitter Jokes?
Twitterverse is buzzing with memories, jokes and a suggested hologram of the late host.
By Kara Klenk

It's hardly been 24 hours since legendary television personality Dick Clark died from a heart attack. While most are remembering Clark with admiration and reverence — including countless celebrities he helped to make stars — some have taken to social-media outlets to make jokes and question if a hologram version of Clark is forthcoming.
While most celebrities celebrated Clark on Twitter, like @MariahCarey who tweeted a photo of them together with the message "R.I.P. Dick Clark. Your memory will live on eternally as an incredible legend," actor/comedian @DenisLeary took a different tack, referring to Clark as a "leather faced syrup voiced lizard" person. This prompted a lot of "too soon" responses, including one from blogger Perez Hilton, who commented on his blog, "Jeez, Denis Leary. You couldn't wait A WEEK to insult the recently deceased? Allow some time for some of us to grieve. Pretty insensitive." Leary went on to join the "Will Dick Clark be the next hologram?" debate by tweeting, "I'm gonna package a Dick Clark Hologram mc'ing a Tupac Hologram summer tour."
With Clark's death coming so soon after Hologram Tupac took over the Web, it's not surprising that so many are joking about a Clark hologram possibly resuming hosting duties in the future. Comedian @AFFIONCROCKETT tweeted just one of hundreds of similar comments: "R.I.P. the legendary ICONIC DICK CLARK!!! Oh, he's DEFINITELY gonna HOLOGRAM HOST New Years Eve from now on."
Others want to see a hologram collaboration on the stage where it all began last weekend, Coachella. Comedian @DougBenson tweeted this suggestion for the festival where Holo-Pac debuted last weekend: "Dear Coachella, a Dick Clark hologram should introduce the Tupac hologram this weekend." One Twitter user, @thechrisws, was not in favor of any Clark hologram, writing, "If I see a Dick Clark hologram this NYE, I am quitting the future."
Clark's death has also left people hedging their bets on who will inherit his legacy with most of the buzz pointing toward Ryan Seacrest , and that too has become the butt of a few jokes in the Twittersphere. @FSUSteve tweeted, "I'd rather see a hologram of Dick Clark than a real @ryanseacrest," while @thecajunboy joked, "Maybe Hologram Dick Clark can do what real Dick Clark never had the ba--s to do: murder Ryan Seacrest."
While social media is full of honest opinions and negative comments — and comedy helps bring levity to sad events — with Clark's death barely a day old, is it actually too soon to be cracking jokes?

Kimbra Talks About Suiting Up For 'Warrior' With Mark Foster, A-Trak
Singer ventures into dance-music realm for the power track, which was created for Converse's 3 Artists 1 Song series.
By Jocelyn Vena
Before Kimbra hooked up with Foster the People leading man Mark Foster and well A-Trak for "Warrior," she had just "dabbled" in the dance music realm. But on the new track, she plants all four firmly on the floor for the track.
"It's refreshing to kind of go into different genres, sometimes when you've been working on your own stuff for so long," Kimbra told MTV News recently. Currently riding high off the success of her Gotye collaboration, "Somebody That I Used To Know," the singer will release her album, Vows, Stateside in May.
She ended up with Foster and A-Trak at the request of Converse for their 3 Artists, 1 Song series, which brings together artists to work on music and a coinciding music video to help launch the brand's latest shoe line.
And it's not just the song that's big, but also the message of the song. Kimbra offers up a girl-power battle cry on the chorus, singing, "You're just pushing me down, pushing me down, pushing me down/(They tell you, 'Trust your head, be like men' but never feel like you're good enough)/You're just crushing me down, crushing me down, crushing me down/(They wanna take our light, make us fight, but never cry for the ones you love!)/(I'll be your warrior, warrior)."
That in-your-face feeling was actually made with very little face-to-face contact between the three artists, as they were all on separate continents when they mad the song.
"I think that was fun for us all to have boundaries in that sense and not be able to be in the same room," she told MTV News. "But it was kind of fun and we did get the chance to sit down together at one point and that was really great after talking on the phone for so long to finally be in the same room together."
The power of the song's lyrics is mirrored in the video, which features the trio as luchadores battling it out for supremacy. And, despite several shots where the trio is all together, Kimbra let us in on a big secret.
"So the video shoot was challenging because I couldn't be in L.A. for the time of the shoot," she said. "So I think I was in Europe at the time, so we organized for my shoot to be done to a green screen. There's a little bit of face replacement in there as well. I'm telling you all the secrets!
"But it's fun. It's cool that it all looked continuous enough," she added. "I'm a bit bummed I didn't get to do the round-house kicks. That was a stunt double. It was really fun. I always say to them, I could have done [the kicks]. They jumped to conclusions there."

The Warning Signs Of Poor Lawn Aeration medical term for ring worm
Do you often take a look at your lawn and wish it was thicker, greener or less patchy? If that's the case, you might be suffering from soil compaction and poor grass aeration. Luckily, these signs and symptoms are easy to solve by making aerating your turf part of one's standard lawn care routine.
Poor lawn drainage
Soil compaction usually manifests itself by the pooling or puddling of water on the turfs surface or by runoff in to the surrounding beds or paths. Compacted soil has had the air and moisture squeezed out from in between the grains in the soil leaving fewer and smaller passages for the rain to soak in to the turf. This water then collects on the surface and runs off in to the surrounding garden, but leaves the grass with only a wet surface layer and quite tiny seepage into the deeper soil where the roots can access it an nourish the grass.
This puddling and runoff from compacted soil can lead to shallow root structures and rapid drying and dehydration. The suction impact with the evaporating water amongst the grains with the soil also compacts it additional compounding the impact for the next rainfall or watering.
You can determine poor drainage by comparing your lawn to others in the region. If yours appears to be thinner, less green and dries out much more rapidly you may nicely have an problem with water retention inside the soil which will be solved by lawn aeration.
Thin turf or bare batches
A thin coverage of grass can be a fantastic sign that your turf isn't absorbing or retaining enough water and that the grasses root system isn't extensive sufficient to keep the grass drinking from the water stored deeper in the turf. Some of this possibly due to your neighborhood climate, but if you evaluate your lawn for your neighbours and it looks dry and washed out then you might effectively have a lawn aeration challenge.
In extreme cases, specifically in high use places for example close to paths and shortcuts across your lawn, you might see bare locations of turf exactly where the grass has been worn away and will not come back. A healthy, difficult seeded grass ought to stand as much as heavy use if the soil is in superior condition and complete of air, moisture and nutrients. Just don't forget to cut tiny and usually to promote the grass to grow back thickly and to spread over the thinner patches.
Coverage of lawn thatch
If you've a thick layer of dead organic material, or thatch, medical term for ring worm, covering your turf at the base of one's grass blades then poor aeration may be to blame as this is one with the signs of lawn compaction. Within a standard, healthy lawn, the soil is complete of air, moisture and nutrients that promote a robust population of both microfauna for example fungi and bacteria as well as the larger soil dwelling animals for example earthworms that promote a wholesome soil. Both of these assist to break down dead organic material above and below the surface and assist return the nutrients to the soil to assist in feeding the remaining grass.
Lack of those helpers as a result of soil compaction and poor aeration lets the thatch layer build up and can get so thick that rain or watering it merely soaks the thatch where it acts as a barrier for the water and air to penetrate the soil perpetuating the issue. A continually damp layer of dead material is also a perfect breeding ground for the diseases of grass.
Simply scarifying the lawn to eliminate this material and aerating the lawn will solve this challenge.
Disease, weeds and moss
An unhealthy lawn, by whatever result in, tends to leave the grass thinner, drier and with a stunted root technique that leaves it open to dehydration and illness.
As the grass starts to thin out, it exposes bare soil that supplies the ground space for weeds to start to take hold. Spring may be the ideal time when wet and warmer circumstances with a post-winter turf offer the ideal opportunity for them to take root and grow rapidly. If the grass is just not correctly maintained the weeds will go to seed and spread giving you a larger difficulty!
Moss can be a related dilemma, often in much more shaded places exactly where the grass can't get sufficient water or light to develop as thickly as it might otherwise. These areas, specifically if they are damp are fantastic for numerous mosses which can push out the grass unless the problem is addressed.
Lawn or yard aeration, a remedy to your lawn woes
In all these circumstances, lawn aeration can enable drastically to help keep the weeds in check, what do you put on ringworm, encourage the grass to grow back thicker and stronger and demand less time, effort and funds to preserve. If your lawn suffers from these, order in an aerator and read on to uncover the advantages of lawn or yard aeration.

Brad Pitt And Angelina Jolie Uniting Onscreen Too?
Pair reportedly may appear together in Ridley Scott's 'The Counselor,' starring Michael Fassbender.

Have you heard the news, movie fans? Seven years after meeting on the set of "Mr. and Mrs. Smith," Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are engaged! No, for real this time. Cynthia Pett-Dante, Pitt's manager, confirmed the news on Friday (April 13), saying, "It is a promise for the future and their kids are very happy."
Robert Procop, the designer of Jolie's engagement ring, released a statement to People: "Brad had a specific vision for this ring, which he realized over a yearlong collaboration with Robert. He wanted every aspect of it to be perfect, so Robert was able to locate a diamond of the finest quality and cut it to an exact custom size and shape to suit Angelina's hand."
We can hear all the ladies in our office swooning, but that's not the only exciting news for fans of the Hollywood power couple. Pitt and Jolie may star together alongside Michael Fassbender in the forthcoming movie "The Counselor."
Deadline Hollywood reports that director Ridley Scott wanted Pitt and Javier Bardem for the movie. As he's close to getting them both, rumors are circulating that Jolie might also be in talks to play the female lead. She and Scott have been collaborating on a Gertrude Bell biopic, which may have led to the rumors. With Brangelina's engagement now official, it would make sense that the actors would want to remain close to one another.
But Pitt and Jolie wouldn't be the only ones to reunite via "The Counselor." This would be the first time Scott and Pitt work together since Scott directed "Thelma & Louise," a film that undoubtedly launched Pitt's career.
"The Counselor" was written by Cormac McCarthy. It follows a well-respected lawyer (Fassbender) who gets involved in the drug business and quickly finds himself in a situation that's more than he can handle. If cast in the film, Pitt would play a shady middleman and Bardem would be Fassbender's associate. The movie is said to start filming in June and Fox is currently negotiating to distribute.

'Justified' Season Finale Leaves Walton Goggins 'Proud' Of Boyd Crowder
Crowder is on the rise to power in Harlan County, and the only place left to go is down, actor Walton Goggins tells MTV News.

Being bad can cost an arm and a leg. And in the case of Robert Quarles, well ... at least he's still got the leg!
"Justified" concluded its third season on Tuesday night, bringing the 13-episode conflict between U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens, meat-cleaving money-hoarder Ellstin Limehouse and the bleach-blond OxyContin-popping gangster Quarles to a boil. In the midst of Limehouse's slaughterhouse, Quarles tried to kill Givens with that way-too-cool gun up his sleeve, only to find his gun — and, by extension, most of his arm — on the floor, cleaved off in one smooth move by a butcher-knife-wielding Limehouse. It was a glorious, gory way to close out the Quarles story while still leaving the door open for the immensely watchable Neal McDonough in future seasons, and an equally brilliant way to deliver on the bloody promise of Limehouse's butchering skills, all while keeping Timothy Olyphant's Raylan firmly in the mix.
There was only one ingredient missing from the equation: Boyd Crowder, the most complicated criminal in Harlan County. Played to morally ambiguous perfection by "The Shield" veteran Walton Goggins, Boyd nearly left season three of "Justified" in a prison cell — all-too-familiar circumstances for the pyrotechnically inclined antihero — and, in the process, unavailable for the final showdown between Raylan, Quarles and Limehouse. To a degree, Boyd's exclusion from the scene was disappointing for fans wanting to see the character get some much-craved justice against Quarles and Limehouse, two of his chief rivals throughout season three. But Goggins sees it another way.
"In some ways, Boyd being in that scene, that's what you expected. That's kind of the payoff that everybody was looking for," Goggins told MTV News in a recent interview about how the "Justified" finale played out for Boyd. "In some ways, we don't want to rob people of those expectations, but I believe ['Justified' executive producer Graham Yost] is always looking for different kinds of angles. Boyd was really robbed of his revenge on both [Dickey Bennett, played by 'Lost' alum Jeremy Davies] and on Quarles in a way. I think that's really going to serve the story going forward."
What wouldn't have served the story going forward, however, was sticking Boyd behind bars once again, as many viewers were likely fearing over the course of the season finale. Early on in the episode, Limehouse tipped off Raylan and the authorities to the burial site of Devil, a man Boyd shot and killed earlier in the season as a punishment for treason. Once the body was discovered, Boyd was arrested and left incarcerated for the remainder of the episode. With all signs pointing towards a neon orange jumpsuit as Boyd's season four wardrobe of choice, both the character and the audience were stunned when the mentally ill Arlo Givens — Raylan's criminal father and one of Boyd's closest confidants — stepped up and took credit for killing Devil, condemning himself and saving Boyd in the process. For Goggins, Arlo falling on the sword meant choosing his adoptive son over his biological one, a choice that's steeped in poetry.
"I think it's a story that's, really, been going on since the first season, when Raylan is having problems with his father, and I was having problems with mine," Goggins said. "But Boyd's father dies, so he never has a chance to make up for that lost time or come to a conclusion about his father, to find forgiveness about his father, and to tell him about that. But Boyd can do that with Arlo, and that's real symmetry. It's from the heart. It's pretty cool."
Of course, with Arlo in jail, Boyd's inner circle is now down to two: his against-all-odds girlfriend Ava Crowder (a woman who previously killed Boyd's brother — her husband at the time — and trained a gun on Boyd himself at multiple points throughout "Justified," mind you) and his wheelchair-bound cousin Johnny Crowder. In the finale, it was revealed that Johnny had gone behind Boyd's back and provided the whereabouts of Devil's corpse to Limehouse in an effort to take Boyd's place as kingpin of Harlan. That information never materialized for Boyd, but Goggins doesn't think it'll be long before he sniffs out Johnny's recent deception.
"He doesn't know about Johnny, but for my money, Boyd is smart enough to figure that out," said Goggins, who added that as a result of the season finale, Boyd's list of confidants is going to narrow down to just one: Ava. "There's so much more to unearth in the relationship between Boyd and Ava. Love born out of violence is the greatest gift of all, in some ways. This kind of redemption through caring for another person, maybe that will wind up being the moral of the story for Boyd. It's really exciting to think about."
Goggins is certainly thinking a lot about Boyd's future. Even though he wasn't present in the climactic slaughterhouse showdown, Boyd still got the result he would have wanted. "What's fantastic about the direction of the finale is that Boyd got to clear the deck by not firing a single shot against the two people he wanted to take out," he said. "Because their interests aligned, Raylan did it for him. So now he has a clear cut path to be the king."
But even if it's good to be the king, it sure as sunshine ain't easy. "One of my favorite sayings is 'the only thing about being on top of the hill is that there's nowhere else to go but down.' I think that's something to take into consideration with the story as it goes forward," Goggins said, acknowledging that Boyd has plenty of obstacles standing between himself and Harlan royalty. "I think Limehouse won't be the only person Boyd will have to deal with next season in order to become number one on the call sheet."
Still, Goggins believes that Boyd is now positioned to accomplish greatness in Harlan County, something he's always strived for, not just for himself, but for the people as well. "There's a scene in episode nine that was cut," the actor recalled. "After [Boyd and his candidate for Harlan's sheriff] lost the election on paper, Boyd gives this rallying speech to the people who have assembled in the room, and you look around the room and it's full of prostitutes, derelicts, the 99 percent: the poor and disenfranchised. While on one level it may seem self-serving, how Boyd is able to rally those people, I can tell you something I've never told anyone before: I think Boyd fancies himself the leader of the disenfranchised. For Boyd and his perverted morality, he's the guy who really believes, 'In my world, all boats rise. When I'm in charge, that money will filter down, and everyone will have a better life.' "
"That's a real crystal-clear motivation for this guy to have license to do what he feels he needs to do," Goggins continued. "This is a guy who is so proud of where he comes from, and unlike ['Justified' season two villain] Mags, he's not a person who would sell them down the river. Not his MO. I think that's special. We haven't seen that in a story in a while on television."
